The Sound of Trieste
Follow the Music and discover the beauty of the Imperial city between sea and mountains
The Teatro Verdi’s summer music season returns with The Sound of Trieste, part of Trieste Estate 2025, the rich cultural programme organised and promoted by the Municipality of Trieste – Department of Cultural and Tourism Policies. Highlights include three performances of Tosca, a symphonic evening dedicated to Ennio Morricone, and Carmina Burana at San Giusto Castle, the operetta Al Cavallino Bianco at Teatro Verdi, a tribute to Ezio Bosso in Piazza Verdi to mark five years since his passing, and the now traditional Sunset and Sunrise Concerts at Miramare.
Directed by the acclaimed young talent Stefania Panighini—renowned for her refined touch and psychological depth—Puccini’s Tosca returns to the evocative Courtyard of the Militia at San Giusto Castle. On the podium, Enrico Calesso, now deeply attuned to the Teatro Verdi’s Orchestra and Chorus, will lead a stellar cast featuring the internationally celebrated Italian tenor Fabio Sartori, the superb Russian soprano Elena Pankratova in the title role—a familiar presence on the world’s leading stages—and baritone Ambrogio Maestri, a true pillar of Italian opera, as Scarpia.
With performances on 29 June, 1 July, and 4 July, Tosca will inaugurate Trieste’s musical summer. The title is a perfect match for the architectural grandeur of the iconic San Giusto monument, and this brand-new production by Teatro Verdi has been conceived specifically for the Courtyard of the Militia. The result promises a visually powerful staging that will highlight the cast’s deep affinity with Puccini’s music.
The season continues on 9 July with a symphonic concert dedicated to Ennio Morricone, followed on 12 July by Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana—now nearly a summer classic at the Verdi—this year conducted by Beatrice Venezi.
On 19, 20, and 21 July, audiences will return to the theatre for the only operetta of the 2025 summer season: Al Cavallino Bianco by Ralph Benatzky, presented in its beloved Italian version—made popular through numerous television productions during the golden era of RAI, and now firmly rooted in the hearts of the public. A perfect title for Trieste, thanks to its cheerful comedic spirit and its role as a bridge between traditional operetta and musical theatre, Al Cavallino Bianco will be staged as a new production born of the now well-established collaboration between Teatro Verdi and the International Operetta Association.
On 11 July, Domenico Lazzaroni—principal trombone of the Teatro Verdi Orchestra—will once again be the artistic director and driving force behind the open-air event dedicated to Ezio Bosso, La musica sussurra e ci svela la vita (“Music Whispers and Reveals Life”), a deeply anticipated evening this summer, marking five years since the death of the great artist from Turin. The programme continues on 28 July with the much-loved Sunset Concert at Miramare, and closes on 3 August with the ever-popular Sunrise Concert in the park.
