Two of the most beloved and genre-crossing works of the 20th century celebrate the return of open-air symphonic music in the newly renovated musical arena of San Giusto Castle.  On 9 July, the spotlight falls on iconic film music, with a richly evocative programme featuring the works of Morricone and other legends. On 12 July, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff — which has since taken its place in the mainstream cultural canon thanks to cinema and rock music — takes the stage as a towering example of 20th-century musical thought.

The symphonic season opens with a sweeping journey through some of the most iconic soundtracks in international film history. From Jurassic Park to The Lord of the Rings, from Schindler’s List to Mary Poppins, from The Godfather and Once Upon a Time in the West to Limelight and Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, the programme brings to life the unforgettable themes of Morricone, John Williams, Sherman, Nino Rota, Henry Mancini and more. The Orchestra of the Verdi Theatre will be conducted by the young Jacopo Sipari di Pescasseroli, Principal Guest Conductor of the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, and will feature Gianluca Littera as soloist on chromatic harmonica — one of the very few musicians in the world to have devoted his entire career, in both classical and jazz contexts, to this folk-derived instrument. A true virtuoso, he brings out its full expressive potential, which becomes essential in several pieces featured in the programme, including Morricone’s unforgettable Western themes.

On Saturday 12 July, Carmina Burana takes centre stage — a landmark of open-air symphonic music that mirrors the 20th-century fascination with early music and was, due to its powerful celebration of freedom, banned by the Nazi regime. Today, this powerful musical fresco has long transcended its scholarly origins to become a staple of mainstream culture, thanks in part to its widespread use in cinema and rock music. Conducted by Beatrice Venezi, the performance will feature an outstanding trio of soloists: rising Korean soprano Yerang Park, countertenor Gustavo Argandoňa — fresh from the Monteverdi Festival in Cremona — and baritone Vincenzo Nizzardo.
