In collaboration with FVG Orchestra and Coro del Friuli-Venezia Giulia
With eight concerts, from 15 September to 22 December, the Teatro Verdi much-attended symphony season is back. This year, it will start with two non-subscription appointments as part of the New Trieste Festival in collaboration with the Trieste Concert Society. The theatre orchestra will be the protagonist of this season, with a varied programme including some true gems, from the great German tradition to rarer 20th-century pieces, and a grand closing event with Puccini’s Messa di Gloria (for orchestra and four-part choir) to celebrate the centenary of the composer’s death.
After the capsule within the New Trieste Festival with the two appointments in collaboration with the Trieste Concert Society, which will see Giovanni Sollima in double capacity as cello soloist and conductor, as well as Rachmaninov and Dvorak with Will Humburg on the podium and Nikolai Lugansky at the piano Friday 27 September will mark the real beginning of the season, with an interesting and original event dedicated to European 19th century traditional folk music rediscovery and classical reinterpretation, namely the rare Symphonie espagnole for violin and orchestra by Édouard-Victor-Antoine Lalo and Musorgsky’s Tableaux d’une exposition as orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. On the podium, all the experience of Austrian conductor Hans Graf and on the violin is acclaimed virtuoso Sergej Krylov.
On 5 October, this will be followed by a more classical Brahms and Schumann concert, featuring the return of the brilliant young cellist Ettore Pagano and great Serbian violinist Stefan Milenkovich, under the guide of 81-year-old conductor Hartmut Haenchen, a true master of the German school and keeper of its soundest musical tradition.
On 11 October, the Teatro Verdi will be the host of a remarkable and original concert, starting with Tre Momenti Lirici per un Melodramma by the internationally-renowned Cesare Barison, from Trieste, and followed by the even rarer Toccata for Piano and Orchestra, a piece by Sandro Fuga, from Turin, who won the “City of Trieste” Symphony Composition in 1952. Closing the concert will be Luigi Dallapiccola’s Cinque frammenti di Saffo – Liriche greche and Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, a masterpiece that marked the beginning of the composer’s celebrated ‘neoclassical’ period. Conducted by the young Tommaso Turchetta, of Neapolitan origin but adopted by the best German orchestras, the concert will feature the voice of renowned soprano Marie Pierre Roy, especially confident with the Baroque and contemporary repertoire, and the talent of pianist Giacomo Fuga, son of composer Sandro Fuga and therefore the interpreter par excellence of his father’s works.
October and November will also see two appointments with Music Director Enrico Calesso: on 18 October, with Vorspiel und Isoldes Liebestod from Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, followed by Ferruccio Busoni’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra – marking the celebration of the centenary of Busoni’s death, with Giuseppe Gibboni (winner of the Paganini Prize) on the violin – and finally Richard Strauss’s two-tone poems: Don Juan and Tod und Verklärung. Saturday 23 November will feature the seldom-performed oboe concerto – also by R. Strauss – and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7.
On 22 December, Puccini will close the season with the rare Messa a quattro voci e orchestra (also known as Messa di Gloria), conducted by Maestro Jordi Bernàcer, an early work and the composer’s last foray into the sacred repertoire, as the last in a line of five generations of organists (at St. Martin’s Cathedral in Lucca), maestri di Cappella, teachers at the Music Institute and authors of operas and sacred music. The Mass – long forgotten and rediscovered only in 1952 – will certainly intrigue Puccini lovers, reminiscent as it is of the composer’s dark youth, and paving the way for his future extraordinary musical career.
Paolo Rodda, Artistic Director: “Our orchestra, so curious and solid in its approach, perfectly embodies the spirit of this city, and prompts us never to err on the side of laziness when programming our symphony seasons. When you work with such talented and artistically vivacious musicians, discovering unexplored repertoires, sometimes to be studied from scratch, is not a problem but a genuine pleasure. This is how, year after year, we grow together with a new, diverse, stimulating and educated audience, and the city’s musical level can only benefit from it.”
Enrico Calesso, Music Director: “It will be a great pleasure and honour to continue working with the Verdi Orchestra on our exploration of Richard Strauss’ work, as well as to celebrate the anniversaries of Bruckner’s birth (with Symphony No. 7) and Busoni’s death (with the Violin Concerto), the latter having had a special connection with Trieste.”
Giuliano Polo, Superintendent: “After last year’s intense symphony season, we are very happy to resume our musical dialogue with our audience, which is a fundamental asset of every Opera and Symphony Foundation. The whole theatre is excited about this new season and considering the very democratic and inclusive pricing policy – in contrast to the general European trend – we believe we are doing our best to regain an audience, which may have felt lost in the past but needs to reassert its role as a strong point in the city’s cultural reputation. The symphony programme is wide and varied, offering great and timeless classics as well as other, more intriguing works, suitable for expanding the listening horizons of those seeking new and unexplored titles, in an effort to meet all of our audience’s cultural needs.”
The subscription campaign is open until Friday, 27 September 2024.
