As part of the “Il Rossetti a Miramare” series
Forecourt of Miramare Castle
SUNSET CONCERT
Monday 28 July 2025, 8.40 p.m.
Conductor: DAVID SCHLAGER
Violin: STEFANO FURINI and ALEŠ LAVRENČIČ
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Concertone in C major K. 190 for two violins, with solo oboe and cello
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
Ein Sommernachtstraum (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) Overture – Scherzo – Intermezzo – Nocturne – Wedding March
Orchestra of the Fondazione Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi di Trieste
An evening of Austrian grace for this Sunset Concert conducted by the young maestro, singer and organist David Schlager, founder and artistic director of The Styrian Chamber Philharmonic, and an eclectic talent on the rise. Joining him are our concertmaster Stefano Furini – an ongoing link between the excellence of our orchestra and that of La Scala – and principal second violin Aleš Lavrenčič, a native of Gorizia who is also active as a composer. The programme opens with one of Mozart’s earliest compositions following his return from his 1771 journey to Italy: clearly an homage, from its very title, to our country and its musical tradition at the time. It then moves to the music Mendelssohn composed for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, commissioned by the King of Prussia, creating a musical atmosphere perfectly suited to this unique concert, which has now become a cherished tradition for the Verdi Orchestra.

Violin: STEFANO FURINI, ANNA APOLLONIO

Quintet in B minor for clarinet, two violins, viola and cello, Op. 115
Soloists of the Orchestra of the Fondazione Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi di Trieste
This year’s sunrise concert offers a chamber music experience, featuring two works by Wagner and Brahms entrusted entirely to the spontaneous chamber ensembles that thrive within the Orchestra of the Teatro Verdi di Trieste. The concert opens with a transcription for string quartet of Wagner’s famous Siegfried Idyll, composed as a gift for the 34th birthday of his beloved wife Cosima. Its first performance took place as a surprise at the Wagner family villa, as Cosima awoke on Christmas morning in 1870. Also featured in the programme is the Quintet in B minor for clarinet and string quartet, a work imbued with poignant melancholy, composed by Brahms for the renowned clarinettist Richard von Mühlfeld. A perfect programme to welcome the new day.
