A brand-new one-act opera, Le Nozze di Figaro, Fantasia (The Marriage of Figaro – A Fantasy), makes its return at the Teatro Verdi: a lively retelling in music and words of Mozart’s immortal masterpiece. This imaginative production is the result of composer Paola Magnanini’s vibrant reorchestration, paired with a witty libretto adapted by Andrea Binetti. Specifically conceived for young audiences and families, this new staging will feature the chamber ensemble of the Teatro Verdi Orchestra, led by esteemed Konzertmeister Stefano Furini – a pillar of the Trieste orchestra and an active presence in major ensembles including La Scala in Milan.
This new chapter is part of Teatro Verdi’s ongoing commitment to making the great classical repertoire accessible and engaging – nurturing the audiences of tomorrow through entertainment and education. At the heart of this vision is the Victor de Sabata Hall: a refined space where the theatre and the city come together. Here, music takes shape in many forms – from one-act operas to musical press conferences and opera-night lounges – a truly shared place where everyone can feel at home in Trieste.
From 29 October to 12 November 2025, this new commission and production of The Marriage of Figaro will grace the stage. Mozart’s spirited score, full of melodic charm and a fairy-tale-like plot, already lends itself naturally to a younger audience. The chamber reduction has been entrusted to the Arezzo-born composer Paola Magnanini, a specialist in creating concise, captivating scores tailored to the swift pace of modern storytelling. Her collaborations in this realm include leading institutions such as Coccia Theatre in Novara and the Spontini Pergolesi Foundation. The libretto bears the signature of a beloved figure in the city: Andrea Binetti, a long-standing collaborator of Teatro Verdi, known for his contributions to operetta and, now, to one-act opera.
The cast brings together many well-known and much-loved performers for local children and their families. Andrea Binetti takes on the dual role of Figaro and Narrator, joined by Giacomo Segulia as Bartolo and Trieste’s own Marzia Postogna – a cherished singer and actress – as Marcellina. Soprano Veronika Foia, recently praised for her performance in Puccini’s Tryptich, appears as the Countess Almaviva, while bass Kevin Baliviera takes on the role of the Count Almaviva, and Stefania Seculin – a familiar presence across the Friuli Venezia Giulia region – steps into the breeches role of Cherubino.
