Following a season marked by outstanding artistic achievements and an exceptional response from audiences, and with the company about to embark on its tour of Vietnam, where it will present La traviata in Arnaud Bernard’s acclaimed 2024 production, not forgetting the celebratory event dedicated to Tartini in the Istrian town of Piran, the Teatro Verdi di Trieste now unveils two new events spanning symphonic music, dance and musical theatre, in addition to the operetta Die Bajadere and the travelling Note d’Estate in Città summer festival. These include the free Festa – A Tribute to Ezio Bosso in Piazza Verdi and, finally, the celebrated John Williams Gala on 22 July in the Courtyard of the Militia at Castel San Giusto.
This promises to be an unusual summer for the Teatro Verdi di Trieste, which will be engaged on two fronts of great significance: the structural restoration of its historic theatre building and the resumption of its international activity with a tour of Vietnam featuring La traviata, in the production by Arnaud Bernard and conducted by the outstanding young Italian conductor Vanessa Benelli Mosell. The tour represents an important contribution to the revival of the Western operatic repertoire in a country undergoing remarkable economic and cultural development, where the historic Opera House built by the French in 1911 now stands alongside a new, state-of-the-art auditorium designed to host major international productions across all performing arts. On 2 August, the Theatre’s Orchestra will also perform in the Istrian town of Piran as part of the celebrations marking the 130th anniversary of the unveiling of the Tartini monument in the town’s main square. The concert will be conducted by the Vienna-born Slovenian conductor Mojca Lavrenčič, with violinist Massimo Quarta appearing as soloist.
Back in Trieste, the programme begins with the now traditional Festa – A Tribute to Ezio Bosso in Piazza Verdi, featuring music and texts by Bosso himself alongside poetry by the much-loved Emily Dickinson. An extensive cast will bring together different artistic disciplines in a truly cross-disciplinary evening, combining the spoken performances of Giacomo Segulia and Giulia Diomede with dance, through choreography by Ambra Cadelli for GeA Danza, singing, and a chamber ensemble comprising pianists Daniele Bonini and Dorian Dionisi, violinists Stefano Furini and Diana Mustea, violist Laura Menegozzo, cellist Andrea Di Corato, double bassist Danilo Sisto, flautist Giorgio Di Giorgi, horn player Chiara Bosco and, finally, trombonist Domenico Lazzaroni, one of the creative forces behind the project alongside Dorian Dionisi.
The summer programme concludes on Wednesday 22 July in the Cortile delle Milizie at San Giusto Castle with one of the world’s most acclaimed concert productions: the John Williams Gala. The Orchestra of the Teatro Verdi will perform a symphonic programme featuring the most celebrated music by the greatest and most popular composer in contemporary cinema. Over the years, this hugely successful production has travelled from major open-air venues around the world to some of the most prestigious theatres, including Teatro alla Scala, bringing together audiences of all generations through the unforgettable scores of E.T., Harry Potter, Indiana Jones – Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List. On the podium will be Gioele Muglialdo, a conductor renowned for his expertise in the film-concert format and widely recognised as one of its pioneers.
